Badminton star Gail brings former partner Nathan with her for Saturday session. Gail Emms and Nathan Robertson practically won it all in a glittering mixed doubles badminton career – World, European, Commonwealth and English champions, they also went so close to Olympic glory. They famously had to settle for silver at Athens in 2004, and sadly crashed out in Beijing at the quarter-final stage four years later. But there was no-one better to teach the arts of the game to youngsters at the Bedford & County Badminton Club on Saturday. Emms, 32, and Robertson, just two months her senior, took two packed-out sessions for juniors and one for adults on a day put together by Gail’s mum Jan Barnes. They passed on the secrets of technique and tactics to the aspiring stars of the local game, and took time out to talk to Bedford Today editor Chris Hall about their careers. Now retired, Milton Keynes-based Emms is a newly-appointed ambassador for British badminton, and playing part-time for a club in Denmark where the game attracts crowds of more than 2000. Robertson is forging a new partnership with 22-year-old Jenny Wallwork and aiming for the London Olympics in 2012. Emms, a former pupil of Bedford’s Dame Alice Harpur School, said they were delighted to be back at the club where she learned the sport. “It’s the first chance we have had to do some coaching and put something back into the game,” she said.
